Clapping during a movie.

Holy shit.

So I like to enjoy in watching a film every now and again. You get to hang out with some friends, without having to think and have real conversation, and after the movie, there is a topic of conversation that you can share your opinion on quite easily. It's relaxing and requires little effort.

Tonight I went and saw 'The ugly truth'. Yeah ok, its a total chick flick, but my bestie wanted to watch it, I hadn't really spent time with her in quite a while, so was happy to go along. And besides, Katherine Heigl plays the female lead, and I would totally do bad things to her.

The movie itself wasn't to bad. It had funny moments. It had typical girly movie 'Awww' moments. It had sad moments. The storyline was wafer thin and very typical of the genre... Girl hates boy 1, girl loves boy 2, boy 1 helps girl get with boy 2, girl realises it was boy 1 all along she loved. It was a little cheesy, and a little sappy, very predictable, not something I'd usually go and see, but wasn't a total waste of money either. I mean, Katherine Heigl. What more do you need?

What grinded me gears about this evenings outing though? Not the fact I had to watch a gorgeous blonde act in an average movie for an hour and a half (and here is another picture of her, just because).

No, it was other cinema patrons. I can understand people laughing at the funny bits... I can kind of understand the lesser intelligent people laughing at the toilet humor not so funny bits. What I can't understand, is people clapping and cheering.

Its not like a stage show, where the actors can hear and appreciate your applause at the end of the performance. There was no thigh slapping comedy moments. There was absolutely no need to put your hands together and make some noise. All it resulted in, was the rest of the cinema patrons not being able to hear the next three lines of dialogue. And it was not just one person. There were at least 15 or 20 people doing it. Clapping when a lame joke was made. Clapping when the girl kisses the boy she loves. Clapping as the credits roll.

Maybe they just learnt how to clap? I'm really not sure... but it made me wish I had a clap so I could pop some bullets and shut them the fuck up.

  1. "Clapping as the credits roll."

Clapping is away to show respect and approval for a film you enjoy. It was *never* meant to be solely for the benefit of actors or directors hearing your approval. It doesn't matter if *no one* is in the theater, clapping is self expression and is a matter of respect. Only a-holes complain when people clap, people who are *actual* human beings save the complaining for the losers that boo anything in order to get attention. That's the opposite of respect.
